You can’t talk about Android word processing apps without mentioning the app designed by Google specifically for web-based word processing. What makes Google Docs so special? It is free!

User Interface

From this Google Docs initial user interface the user can view all of his Google documents, list out each of his document collections, scan through favorite documents, view images, search documents by term and of course start new documents or spreadsheets.

Features

Once the user creates a new document he may tap several basic design options. This includes lists, bold, underline and italic styling tools. The docs editor’s interface also contain navigation arrows. These arrows reverse or re-create changes to the document. The user may choose to create a list or a styled list, establish indent spacing and choose colors for the text.

The writer enters his text. The document should automatically sync. Then, should he wish to work with the document at length without the limitations of his Android device, the writer may log into the Google Docs website and edit the document from the comfort of his home PC.

The latest version of Google docs enables the collaborative editing from the Android device. A user may invite other to share his document. This feature was the focal point of a recently released video from Google detailing the story of a wedding planned through collaborative editing between multiple Android devices.

The Docs app contains a widget allowing the writer to create a new document in just a couple of taps. Using this widget, the writer may start a new document or spreadsheet, upload an image to Google Docs and pull up the Google Docs user interface with just the tap of a finger.

Syncing

The app sync effortlessly and in real time with its web portal counterpart. In fact an Android owner may pull up a document, edit that document and watch the changes as they occur on his PC screen.

Pricing

The best thing about Google Docs, it is free! Users of this app can store up to 5GB of documents without cost. Beyond that amount a user must subscribe and pay a month fee of $2.49. This earns him up to 25GB of space.

Update To Google Drive

In April of 2012, Google announced the release of its Google Drive cloud storage service. At that time Google renamed the Google Docs app to Google Drive. The move reflects what appears to be the clear intent of Google to combine Docs with Drive and make the two products completely the same. A user will be able to control his Google Drive account in the same app from which he creates and edits his Google documents.

Google Docs/Drive may not be the fanciest Android word processor. However, its user interface and styling tools provide enable its users to easily create documents without having to navigate through a clunky set of icons. Its styling tools are intuitive and helpful. Its collaboration feature is useful and innovative. And, its price can not be beat. Google Docs is free to use and can be downloaded from the Google Play store without so much as a one cent payment.

Google Docs for Android update brings collaborative editing for all - It's been barely a month since Google Docs on Android got offline support, but here comes Mountain View with another equally impressive update. Those upgrading today are treated to collaborative editing, much in the vein of their desktop counterparts. That means you can now watch edits happen in real time from your Android tablet or smartphone. In addition, there's a bevy of interface tweaks too, including a new pinch-to-zoom gesture and rich text formatting. Read More from Engadget . . . . . .

Google Docs for Android Review - Google Docs for Android grants you viewing and editing texts and spreadsheets, but that redirects you to the mobile website, so offline editing is a no-go – you must have an Internet connection to access your docs. Hopefully, this will change in future versions as the application states that it keeps cache of up to 150MB, but it's the biggest drawback of the app currently – basically turning it into a little more than a wrapper for the mobile website. And dealing with the Google Docs website when viewing or editing unfortunately translates into sluggishness of the whole process. Read More from Phone Arena . . . . . .
