A person does not have to pay for the OliveOffice word processor for Android. OliveOffice is the free to use word processor that works with the Android OS. Optimized for performance on Android phones this app allows its users to create and edit Word, Excel and Powerpoint files. Its word processor supports both the older .doc and newer .docx file types. The app also functions as a viewer for simply viewing these documents. Upon open, text displays in a reflow view to display properly on the Android phones limited screen real estate.

Formatting tools available with the OliveOffice word processor include bold, italics, underline and font size controls. Users may also view images and tables as well as edit specific text inside of the tables.

People can sync their documents from OliveOffice to the cloud. OliveOffice allows it users to interface with cloud-based document providers Google Docs and Dropbox.

Users may also choose to use the program’s Excel and PowerPoint capabilities. These allow the creation of both Excel and PowerPoint documents. A user may also view Adobe PDF files, as well as CHM and MHT file types.

On the down side, the OliveOffice interface is a bit clunky with users having to activate icons in order to find out what they do. The initial interactive menu from which the user selects his documents contains intuitive and well-designed icons. However, the interior controls that are used by the user to actually develop his documents are not attractive and feel rather utilitarian.

Creating a document using the word processor is also clunky and is not an enjoyable experience. But, the product should continue to evolve and get better over time and due to its free price it is hard to complain too much about this.

Of course, free does come with the duty of giving up a small piece of the screen to an advert. The advertising resides on the very bottom of the screen and includes a close box.

OlivePhone, the developers of OliveOffice, have placed the app’s user manual online for all to review. A link to the manual can be found on this page. The manual contains approximately 40 pages of content featuring screenshots. This provides helpful insight into the processes for using the app. This comprehensive document offsets some of the concerns regarding the icon markings.

With its lack of a price tag, OliveOffice is a great app for those who want to view productivity documents on their Android phone and may from time to time need to make minor edits or create simple new documents. At this time, it shouldn’t be considered as an serious alternative to the more expensive word processor apps for those who need to frequently create or edit documents.

Reviews of OliveOffice

The number one reason I don't like OliveOffice is that it doesn't appear as an entry in the Save dialog when downloading files in the web browser or when previewing attachments in Gmail. These are two of the most common ways to get office files onto your Android device, and OliveOffice is no help with them. Read More from TechWorld . . . . . .
